The toy says 3.25 miles at an average of 11.9 mph, about 16 minutes in motion. That's not terrible; it's certainly faster than any other means of transportation I have immediate access to, and time-competitive with driving, even. I've finally figured out the right way to climb the little hill along Temple Rd. between Mystic Ave. and Broadway: if you work up enough speed pulling out of the traffic light, the hill is pretty short and you don't have to slow down too much to make it all the way up. I haven't decided yet whether I should bike in traffic on McGrath heading home or not; it does wind up being the obvious thing to do, though.

Are you just using McGrath to get over the railroad tracks? If so, you could go up Hampshire as far as Columbia, then take Columbia/Willow into Union Square.

OTOH, I've taken McGrath that way a few times, and other than the traffic smell, it's not that bad. They can see you well coming up the bridge, and on the other side you've got enough momentum to just merge at the same speed as the cars.
