That was incompetent
May. 17th, 2003 09:57 amI got sucked into playing bridge last night with
fclbrokle and others. Now, I've been playing bridge for several months, and goal-oriented trick-taking games for many, many years, so you'd think by now I'd have the basics down. The worst f**k-up of the night was sloughing on a club trick, then looking at my hand on the next trick and realizing that I still had clubs left. Next on the list was four hearts, doubled, vulnerable, going down four ("we promised to take 10 tricks, our opponents laughed at us, and we only took six") for 1100 points. Ow. There were other bits of miscommunication along the way, and the cards in general seemed less friendly than they've been. ("Hey, look! A face card! I didn't have one of those last hand!")
Somehow in spite of all of this, we managed to win three rubbers, to our opposition's two. And that was enough to bring our total score to just above theirs. Which was somehow rewarding. I don't know.
Still to do: figure out how to communicate hand strength, not just length of suits; divine what cards are in partner's hands; know when bidding game/slam is reasonable and when not.
