My Fourth

I met up with everyone else for the experience of air conditioning in Concord, rather than cook with the hordes on the Esplanade. I left home somewhat abruptly on a gamble to catch the commuter rail, which I actually made quite handily. (There have been times when I thought I had unusually good T luck; this includes a couple of weeks ago when I successfully made it from Harvard Square to Wellington Circle in half an hour using the SIPB bus schedule service, the 86 bus, and the orange line, where the transit showed up very promptly for me. This also includes this trip, where I just missed an orange line train from Wellington to North Station, but another appeared within five minutes so I still made the train. I think it's not so much that I have unusually good luck as an unusually high number of attempts, so even if I have the same hit rate per attempt I wind up with a higher absolute number of successes.) It wound up being just me on the train out of our group, which was fine, since I could rail-geek in peace. The train crew had gotten their new Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad uniforms, but it was otherwise a very typical commuter rail experience. In Concord, multiple members of the staff got off the train; one was walking back towards the open door, and other yelled back at him, "what do you mean the ice cream place is closed on the Fourth of July?"

Air conditioning was. I got to watch [livejournal.com profile] obra and [livejournal.com profile] chrysaphi talk to each other across the room using iChat. There was exploration of Bluetooth cell phone toys, and expand-a-spheres, and barbecue, and alcohol. We went and looked at the autonomous lawn mowers. The scary Sprite was...scary. And if you stand at just the right spot in the kitchen, the air conditioning blows right on you, which is nice when you've just come in from outside.

The rest of the weekend wasn't so thrilling. At the party, [livejournal.com profile] cfox had suggested attempting the Plum Island trip on Sunday, but that got tripped up by her bike being in Concord, heat, and sheer laziness. I did spend much of the weekend playing a port of Star Control 2 to Linux. People watched Terminator and Terminator 2 at ET on Saturday, so I finally got to see those. I'll probably wait for LSC to show Terminator 3. (Not my problem!) Yesterday I went to SIPB, scanned another two and a half rolls of film from Arizona (only half a roll to go!), and had an utterly unimpressive dinner.
