Went to the semiannual Hall's Pond work party today. It was actually quite a nice day out. There was a huge APO mob, and a somewhat smaller ET mob. (And a couple of ET people who seemed to prefer to identify themselves with the APO group; sigh.) After about half an hour of raking, I was told that they were in need of an experienced weed-wrencher in the Amory Woods area. Yay, bright orange tree destruction tools of doom!

[livejournal.com profile] 76trombones and I worked on removing invasive Norway maples, before we had lunch with the ET people and I got to be crusty at the younger APO/LSC folk. One of the trees we ripped out was particularly recalcitrant; it had conveniently planted itself around the roots of another tree that we actually wanted to save. After about an hour of work, though, we did manage to get it out.

I kind of wonder how that area will turn out. Almost every time I've gone to Hall's Pond (over the past seven years now), we've done some work removing invasive plants in Amory Woods. As a result, though, the back area of it (closest to Amory St.) looks almost barren, with some tall trees. There can't be that many invasive plants left, but that's mostly because we've ripped all of it out, and there's not that many plants left in general.

Oh yes, and there was a gazebo. "It's not good or evil, Eric. It's a gazebo."

I don't think it was so much a question of identity, as "someone has to show the APO people how to get there." (Though, come to think of it, [livejournal.com profile] rjpb knew how to get there...) I must admit, I was perplexed by the decision to split the mob into two mobs. It seems like it would have been better to get there all at the same time, so the "hi, here's what we're doing today" speech could be given only once; it doesn't seem like the benefit of one mob getting there 5 minutes earlier really outweighed that. But I don't think it was the end of the world, and the speech-giver didn't seem annoyed, so whatever.
