Made baked Alaska for dessert last night. It came out well; I did a better job of getting the meringue everywhere this time. The recipe in the middle Joy of Cooking was a little odd in that I think of baked Alaska as canonically having a brownie base, and we had some issues getting cake parts out of their pans, but it worked. Five people were enough to get through most of it, so somebody gets a hunk of ice cream with some cold cake and meringue left on it for dessert still.

Try putting the rack a little bit lower (or higher if the bottom is burning).

Not actually useful in either case. Dessert wanted to be under the broiler, and I should have taken it out at the point where I said "the top of the meringue is browning but the bottom doesn't look quite cooked". The tater tots were pretty low already, and their problem was mostly that I was impatient to put them in and then didn't have counter space to take them out when everything finished at the same time, with them at the upper end of their time range.
