Renting a car is not as cheap as I might have hoped. It looks like, if I trek out to the airport, I can get a tiny car for $40/day cooked (pick up early on Saturday, return late on Sunday). (Travelocity claims that Thrifty will rent me a car for about $60 on the weekend, but their Web site is broken.) Zipcar would be about $63/day cooked, so that's a deal, and it gives me the option of going to the train show as long as I want. I'm a little wary of depending on someone else for a ride lest they get bored or there's disagreement over whether to go a second day or not. Alternate transportation looks inconvenient (the Lake Shore Limited gets to Springfield around noon and returns around 3 PM; can't find a useful bus that direction). Hmm.

Which day do you want a car?
(If this Saturday I don't see why you couldn't borrow ours, but I've lost track of which weekend.)

No useful buses to Springfield? Springfield is the main Peter Pan station (Greyhound, which is somehow the same company but not really, has lots of buses to Springfield also). They usually have one bus per hour. It's about $40 roundtrip, though, so I've switched to renting cars to get out to see my family.

But yeah, car rentals aren't super-cheap. I've used Enterprise and Budget recently, and it was $25/day plus $12/day for liability insurance (my credit card covers the other ~$10/day insurance, at least).
