I have always found it very frustrating to find good rss feeds too, for much the same reasons. Would that feeds had interests.
Here are some feeds: bbcnewsworld, cs_monitor, ny_times_int, salon_com, scientific_amer, theonionfeed, thestraightdope -- newsfeeds which perform in the obvious manner. (If these interest you, you might also try the community nikkinewsnet.)
blogguscaesari (the Gallic Wars rendered as a blog), phluzein (archaeological news)

I understand that the comics feeds are very popular, but the husband's script slurps comics for me.
Of course, these are all the names of the feeds on LJ, not the feeds themselves, but you are clever enough to find that info if you care :).
