Took lunch to go to the T offices at 10 Park Plaza. Got a new T pass; the guy there seemed to think there was a systematic problem with the November subway and combo passes, but gave me a new one anyways, and it seems to work so far. Also got a T photography permit. (I wonder if the guy wanted a photocopy of my driver's license for PATRIOT-related reasons.) "...and not to use strobe flash, floodlights or tripods." I should take my camera out and see if I can plausibly take underground pictures with high-speed film and no longer than 1/30 second exposure. But this also means I can legitimately get a picture of the faux-MTA logo on the side of the "new" PCCs on the Mattpan line now.

Tripods!?!?!

Yeah, I successfully went through the turnstile at Boylston and tried at Kendall, and the new pass worked fine. So I think I just got unlucky with the pass.

The best explanation I can think of for the tripod rule is just that they don't want you blocking off that much space; it's a "moving people around safely" issue. That would also be part of the explanation for the "no floodlights" part of the rule, with "don't blind the train driver" being the other important justification.

Well, google finds a quote from WMATA (DC Metro) saying "no tripods - we don't want anyone to sue us when they trip over your tripod". It also says "tourists take pictures all the time, why would that need a permit?" :-)
