It was already reported in [livejournal.com profile] mitmit that there was an article in Sunday's Globe about athletics at MIT, and there's been some discussion of this on the mit-talk list. Nothing terribly exciting, though, mostly consensus that athletic skill isn't enough to get someone through the MIT academics, and that while athletics has some influence admissions does recognize this.

There was also an article about Fenway House. The article seemed to be mostly positive, which was good. Apparently a "housing crunch" is leading to Fenway telling freshmen that they can't move in. Maybe it would be clever of MIT to relieve this "housing crunch" by letting frosh live off-campus? And it's too bad no other FSILGs have adopted some of their revolutionary concepts, like Work Week. Still, inaccurate good publicity is probably better than no publicity at all.

And in the Tech, but not the Globe, was an article about a July incident at an on-campus fraternity. The hearing in front of the Cambridge Licensing Commission was last week, with a quote from the chair of the CLC that there was a high probability that the house's lodging would be suspended. There's also a quote from the new MIT administrator in charge of FSILGs that the IFC "plans to have a hearing soon". I'm impressed that, even with a fairly complete rollover of the relevant MIT administration layer since 1997, MIT and the IFC can't find it in their hearts to even consider taking preliminary action that would suggest at least a little responsibility for houses.
