So here I am at FCRC in sunny San Diego. Except, of course, that me being me, the sun has conveniently decided to vanish. And I have one pair of pants; I assumed it would be warm enough for shorts the entire time.

The PLDI talks, which I'm ostensibly here for, are about the usual mix; some sessions are worth sitting in on, some aren't. I could in theory go to talks for one of the other conferences scheduled at the same time, but haven't. I'm also really really bad at schmoozing, so I've mostly been hanging out with the MIT crowd and people from other places that I've met before in some context or another.

They've made an attempt to set up wireless networking in the public areas here. It's a nice thought. It'd be better if some subset of people didn't randomly lose. The internal card in my laptop utterly fails anywhere; if I borrow a card and sit in one room but not the other, and I bounce the card a few times, and I don't try to move around, I get good signal and a NATted address. Yay reliability, or something.

I've also been doing a little exploring. Yesterday a few of us went to the zoo, and had a yummy meal downtown. The conference comes with six-day passes on the San Diego public transit system, so I've been exploring that a little. Two light-rail lines, all POP (proof-of-payment: you buy a ticket and ride, and if you're unlucky, there's a spot check that you actually paid). A bizarre looping thing downtown: the Santa Fe Depot and America Plaza stations are a block from each other, but there's a U-turn in between, so at each station the other is to your left facing forwards. Our hotel is right next to one of the stations, so if we're going to downtown (or, perhaps, Tijuana) this is actually convenient.
