Union Square is so horrendously designed that it's worth avoiding, though. It doesn't help that there's what feels like a reasonably direct route from new-home to Big Box Land, AKA The Valley Of Things, in Everett, that happens to go through Union Square; actually looking at a map, it's no more direct than a routing involving 16 or 28, and goes through both Union and Sullivan Squares. Yelch. Unless you're actively trying to get to somewhere like Market Basket from somewhere like MIT, I can't think of a compelling reason you wouldn't prefer to go up Highland than go through Union.
The One True Route from Davisish to Central/MIT is the same as it always was. Get yourself to Park and Somerville, probably going down Cedar, turning left on Elm, and left on Somerville Ave. Turn right on Park, cross the commuter rail, and turn left on Beacon. You're on Hampshire St. when you cross into Cambridge. For Central Square (or Brookline) turn right on Inman St., just past the fire station; for MIT, go straight, and you come up behind Tech Square.
